A man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in Sun City.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in a press release that  his traffic detectives arrested Brian Lee Ferguson,  53, in connection to an April fatal accident.

He was booked into the 4th Avenue jail on 1 count of manslaughter, a class 2 felony.

On April 11, 2016 at about 7 p.m. Mr. Ferguson was traveling south at a high rate of speed on Del Webb Boulevard, approaching the intersection at Thunderbird Boulevard. The victim, Joyce Irons was in the intersection making a turn onto Westbound Thunderbird when Ferguson struck her vehicle. Both Mr. Ferguson and Ms. Irons were taken to a local hospital with critical injuries.

During Mr. Ferguson’s treatment on scene and at the hospital he stated that he had consumed five beers and six shots of alcohol. Detectives learned from hospital staff that Mr. Ferguson’s preliminary blood alcohol levels were 0.241 and he also provided a partial breathalyzer that resulted in a blood alcohol level of 0.139. A warrant was issued for blood samples, it was then determined that Mr. Ferguson was over the legal limit when the accident occurred. Further investigation of Mr. Ferguson’s vehicle revealed two open containers of alcohol in the vehicle.

Ms. Irons sustained a fractured spine and internal bleeding from the collision and succumbed to her injuries on or about April 25. Detectives believe speed and impairment to be factor in this collision.
